2 Sisters Food Group, Gunstones Bakery and Utopia Food's Avana bakeries have announced plans to lay off more than 800 employees across its operations.
The job cuts are due to restructuring of the company after losing several key orders from large retailers.
Bakers Food & Allied Workers union (BFAWU) organising regional secretary John Higgins said the company had planned to cut 112 jobs at Gunstones bakery in Derbyshire by September, with a further 300 jobs to go in January 2015.
"We expect the company to discuss a flexible plan to save as many jobs as possible and for permanent staff to be given the opportunity to fill the roles taken by staff on the agency.
"Overall there is expected to be 890 redundancies over the 2 sisters sites, and it seems to be the northern food sites which are taking the biggest hits, it is like there is an agenda against them," Higgins added.
Another 700 proposed job losses are expected to take place at 2 Sister's Northampton site. The Avana bakery in Newport is also reported to be cutting 390 jobs by November.
