Frozen beef supplies continue slide

Stocks of frozen pork bellies in cold storage remained strong, while supplies of beef and poultry continued to slide, according to the US Department of Agriculture's Cold Storage report.

Stocks of pork bellies in refrigerated warehouses on July 31, 2014 declined 23 percent to 64,690,000 lbs. compared to June, but were up 130 percent from a year ago, according to USDA. Frozen pork supplies totaled 529,250,000 lbs., down 2 percent from the previous month and down 3 percent from last year.

Total pounds of beef in freezers were 366,549,000 lbs., up 2 percent compared to June, but down 21 percent from last year. Total red meat supplies in freezers gained slightly from June to total 933,788,000 lbs., but declined 10 percent compared to a year ago.

Total frozen poultry supplies on July 31 were up 7 percent to 1,105,577,000 lbs. compared to June but down 14 percent compared to 2013, USDA reported. Total stocks of chicken advanced 8 percent from the previous month to 612,605,000 but dropped 13 percent from last year. Total pounds of turkey in freezers climbed 7 percent from last month to 491,116,000 lbs. but dropped 16 percent from July 31, 2013.
