The first Citrus Black Spot interceptions of the South African citrus season have been made in the UK. Unconfirmed reports say that there have been three, all on lemons, but according to Justin Chadwick CEO of Citrus Grower's Association in South Africa, DEFRA has confirmed that there are only two.
The discoveries are said to have been made by a Spanish importer in the UK.
The interceptions were made on 12th June which seems early in the season but according to Justin there have been interceptions in June before. He said they will just have to wait and see how the season progresses before making any major decisions.
After five CBS interceptions there will be a review of procedures for importing South African citrus, but the wording here is also vague. “In case of recurring interceptions due to failing monitoring and certification procedures within the same year, the Commission will review this Decision before the sixth interception has been notified.”
