Onion growers and processors are doing everything they can to harvest onions now that it's dry. "They're forecasting rain again tomorrow, so everyone is right on it. I don't know where to store it all," says Jan Franje of sorting and packaging station Franje Onions. "The demand is good for all the faraway destinations at the moment. It's a bit quieter locally."

Franje himself is done with planting onions and is in the middle of seeding onions. "The colour is a little lacking as everyone was on the case too soon. The planting onions were a bit nicer, but their harvest was dry," says Jan. "It was very busy in organic onions for a period, but now the market is a little calmer. What I believe is a part of it is that a lot of organic consumers now grow their own vegetables."

The bale price for regular onions varies between 23 to 26 cents. "Can these hold up? Everyone hopes so. Some see global opportunities, others are more careful, but it's all about the mood. It's like the AEX, as long as there's the right mood, it will go well," laughs Jan.
