In 2014, the EU-28 imported a total of 11.095 million tonnes of fruit and 1.674 million tonnes of vegetables. For comparison, a year earlier the EU imported 11.036 million tonnes (just 0.5 percent less) of fruit and 1.665 million tonnes of vegetables (0.6 percent less), reports FAMMU/FAPA.
When it comes to fruit, bananas dominated the ranking, with a total of 5.113 million tonnes, followed by pineapples, with 934.0 thousand tonnes, and oranges, with more than 827.0 thousand tonnes. For vegetables, the greatest share corresponded to tomatoes, with less than 487.0 thousand tonnes, and onions, with 273.0 thousand tonnes.
The largest volumes of fruit in this period were supplied by Costa Rica, with 1.852 million tonnes, followed by Ecuador, with 1.533 million tonnes and Colombia, with 1.144 million tonnes. In fourth place we find South Africa, with 1.081 million tonnes. In the case of vegetables, the largest suppliers were Morocco, with 670.6 thousand tonnes, Turkey, with 177.0 thousand tonnes and Egypt, with less than 108.0 thousand tonnes.
