The price at origin for table grapes in Corinth in late September, at the end of this year's harvest, was as high as 1.30 Euro per kilo, reports the newspaper Agrenda. Prices in other areas have also exceeded 1 Euro per kilo, mostly as a result of reduced production this year and a higher demand for export. It is worth noting that huge damage to crops was registered this year, especially in Crete.
The harvest this year actually came to an end a month earlier than usual, as it is normally completed in late October. According to producers in Corinth, the latest rains had a considerable impact, as moisture caused cracks and decay in production areas.
The problem was most pronounced in northern Greece, with up to 80-100% production losses in Kavala. In this area, the price of Sultana grapes stood at 0.90 to 1 Euro per kilo, while the Italia, before the rains, ranged from 0.50 to 0.70 Euro per kilo. The damage affected mostly Sultana grapes, which are the most common variety in the area, as they are more sensitive to rainfall.
