A new study has found that there may be health benefits to consuming whole-fat dairy products.

Published in the latest Journal of Nutrition, scientists discovered making full-fat dairy as part of a diet can lower the chances of an individual experiencing metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic Syndrome is a group of disorders that occur together and increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, stroke and heart disease.

At least 35 per cent of Australia’s adult population has metabolic syndrome. The rate is even higher amongst those with diabetes.

Scientists found the link between eating full-fat cheese, milk, yoghurt and other dairy products and the reduced chance of experiencing metabolic syndrome after studying the diets of 9835 Brazilian adults aged between 35 and 74 years of age.

“Dietary recommendations to avoid full-fat dairy intake are not supported by our findings.” the scientists concluded.

Previously conventional health advice for reducing the risk of developing metabolic syndrome includes healthy eating, regular exercise and quitting smoking.
