According to the data from the Food and Fishery Information Service (SIAP), Zacatecas programmed the biggest onion production in the last 6 years for the autumn-winter 2015-2016 season, which is why they expect production will amount to nearly 50,000 tons of this vegetable.

In 2010, forecasts were the entity would produce 39,290 tons of onions this year, a figure that has changed throughout the years.

Forecasts are production will amount to 49,334 tons in the autumn-winter season (AW) 2015-2016.

Regarding surface area, Zacatecas was going to cultivate 1,510 new hectares but only 1,442 were planted. To date only 290 hectares of the crop have been harvested.

In March 2016, Zacatecas had 8,300 hectares devoted to onion production, which makes the entity the fourth State with the biggest production at the national level.

It's worth noting that the entity was expected to yield 32,682 tons per hectare. However, yields have only amounted to 28,621 tons per hectare so far.

According to the latest data of the SIAP, which depends on the Ministry of agriculture, livestock, Rural Development, fishing and food (Sagarpa), Northern Baja California has the biggest production volume so far with 30,148 tons; followed by the State of Sinaloa with 23,630 tons, Sonora with 10,815, and Zacatecas, with 8,300 tons.
