"Our season started early so we could achieve higher prices in the US market in December. Then, we started to export our fruits to Europe in the second week of January. The UK is our company's main European export market, but we also make shipments to Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and Poland, "said Ocksan Aju, from the Peninsula Corporate Group (Melones Peninsula).
In the early 90s, the company only produced rice. However, it began to grow melons to promote economic and social development in the Nicoya Peninsula. "We supply the markets with white Honey Dew melons, Hami melons, and watermelons, both with seeds and without them. Melopen and DeliFruit are our own brands, but we also work with our clients' brands," added Ocksan.
"Last year was a difficult year for the sector. All the melon producers in Costa Rica faced difficulties. This season has begun with a strong market due to the early rains in Brazil, but now the market is moving a little more slowly, even though prices are still acceptable. In addition, the season is not over yet, "concluded Ocksan.
