Following an increase in onion prices, Morocco has started to import a large amount of onions to avoid a further price increase. Onion prices in Morocco are normally about 1 or 2 dirhams/kilo, and this year, following a lack of rain, prices have increased to 14 dirhams/kilo.
Minister Al-Wafa from the Chamber of Representatives, has announced that the government plans to start importing lentils and chickpeas too in order to satisfy demands over Ramadan (June to July).
The only vegetable to see a price decrease last week was green onions, but red and white onions remain more expensive.
The Meknes-Tafilalet region is the main onion production zone in Morocco (12% of onion production and 22 hectares).
