Last Tuesday, Russia stopped a shipment of potatoes coming from Israel in the port of Novorossiysk after it was allegedly found to carry agricultural pests, reports the Russian agency "Sputnik".

Russian agricultural inspection authorities "of the Krasnodar Territory and the Republic of Adygea" claimed that the batch did not meet the health requirements of the Russian Federation.

The shipment under quarantine coming from Israel, totalling 27.3 tonnes, was said to be infected with potato tuber moth.

The potato tuber moth mostly affects potato tubers and fresh tomatoes and its presence can lead to a loss of between 25 and 80 percent of the crop.

Back in March, the Russian agricultural and veterinary control authority had imposed temporary restrictions on the import of potatoes from Egypt due to the discovery of Egyptian potato shipments infected with "bacterial brown rot."
