Demand on the asparagus market is currently calm, and prices are under pressure. “This is also caused by the flooding in Limburg last week. Certain plots could not be harvested because of it, and that accumulated volume is now entering the market,” salesman Jan Muurmans of Teboza says. “I expect many growers will stop because of low prices.”

Currently, prices for asparagus are between three and four euro. “The Class I asparagus are still being sold well, and for certain selections we even have to tell them ‘no,’ but for the lower classes it will become difficult,” Muurmans expects. “If growers stop, supply will diminish, and I think demand will stabilise, and I would even expect a recovery.”

“Overall it has been good for growers of early and mid-season asparagus, and it has been less good for growers of late asparagus. The asparagus season always has two weeks with lower prices, but now that will probably become three weeks. All in all the asparagus season is once again incomparable to previous seasons,” Muurmans concludes.
