US-based TreeHouse Foods has issued a voluntary recall of more than 100 of its products as these may be affected by Listeria-contaminated sunflower seeds.
These products were distributed nationwide through retail stores. So far no illnesses have been reported.
Among them include Southern Grove Roasted and Salted Sunflower Kernels, Natures Harvest Whole Almonds, Southern Grove Dry Roasted No Salt Almond, Natures Harvest Pecans, Best Choice Mountain Trail Mix, Naturally Select Roasted and Salted Sunflower Seed.
A supplier reported the problem to TreeHouse, who has stated that it is working closely with the FDA to further investigate the problem.
Consumers who have purchased these products have been advised to dispose of or return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
If consumed, Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and occasionally fatal effects in young children, fragile or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems.
Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
TreeHouse Foods has more than 50 manufacturing facilities across the US, Canada and Italy, which focuses primarily on private label products.
It produces shelf stable, refrigerated, frozen and fresh products, including beverages and beverage enhancers, meals, condiments and snacks such as nuts, trail mix, bars and dried fruits.
