Punjab Seed Corporation (PSC) is the only public sector organisation providing quality seeds to farmers at a low price, and its application of tissue culture technology to develop quality potato seeds at home, saved a hefty cost on imports.
In a release listed by the media liaison of the Punjab Agriculture Department, a spokesman said that the PSC was making efforts on a self-help basis to provide good quality and high yielding varieties of wheat, cotton, paddy, maize and vegetables seeds for a lower price to farmers.
Through the application of tissue culture technology, the PSC prepared 5,000 100-kg bags of good quality and disease-free potato seeds and sold them to farmers for Rs 4.7 million in 2015-16. That enabled the farmers get a record potato production last year.
