Every week, Vroegop-Windig promotes exclusive products, that are bought directly from the international fresh market, with its concept Marché International. This week, ‘Radicchio la Rosa’ is centre stage.
“We always have two or three types of Radicchio in our assortment, but when my colleagues saw these at an Italian stand at the Fruit Logistica, we knew we wanted to have them for Saint Valentine’s Day,” says Robin Heikens.
“This ‘Radicchio la Rosa’ looks like a rosette, but is 100 per cent a type of lettuce. We thought it was a beautiful product to introduce to specialist shops and catering (suppliers). This dark red type of lettuce might the most expensive lettuce, but it is truly a unique product. The cultivation is very labour-intensive, leaving only the dark red leaves. Other types of lettuce are much cheaper,” Heikens continues.
“They arrived yesterday morning, and we have already sold quite a few boxes,” the salesman for Vroegop-Windig says. “We will know whether we are going to keep them in our assortment after this week. I expect new supply halfway through the week. The Radicchio is a wonderful product to use in recipes for days such as Saint Valentine’s Day or Mothering Sunday. Who would not want a rosette on their plate? They are almost too beautiful to taste!”
