"Despite the fact that the Trofeo green bean variety has been on the market for 15 years, it is still the leader of its segment, i.e. early-spring green beans for fresh consumption," explains Rocco Parisella, sales manager of Four (a Blumen Group SpA division).
Four places two cultivars on the Italian market - Trofeo and Grenada. The latter is very productive in the summer cycles and is relatively young. "We introduced it two years ago with great results in the summer cycle for fresh consumption."
His colleague, Paolo Leonardelli, talks about the main areas the two products are cultivated in: Trofeo is used in Caserta (greenhouses in spring) and Sicily (greenhouses between October and February) but it works for open fields all over Italy both in spring and autumn. Grenada is instead suitable for open fields all over Italy in late spring and summer. "At the moment, hundreds of hectares are dedicated to cultivating green beans.
Technical aspects
Trofeo
early: there are fewer days between sowing and harvesting compared to other varieties. This is an advantage for growers, as it ripens quickly
very high productivity
continuous harvesting: producers can harvest continuously for a long time. This is an advantage for greenhouse cultivation, as producers need abundant continuous harvesting
pods are uniform, appealing, tender and with a good flavour. One term that really conveys the idea of this concept is "buttery".
Grenada
resistant plant suitable for high temperatures
covering leaves: they protect the fruits from direct sunlight
very abundant production
pods are shiny, uniform, with an excellent flavour, tender / buttery and of a high quality
Both varieties are string-free.
