Poland: Slight drop of tomato imports and exports in 2016

According to Eurostat data, Poland imported 142.2 thousand tonnes of tomatoes in 2016, compared to 144.3 thousand tonnes in 2015. From that volume, 128.4 thousand tonnes were imports from EU countries and only 13,800 tonnes came from third countries, informs FAMMU/FAPA.

The largest quantities of tomatoes imported by Poland came from Spain, with 52.3 thousand tonnes, and the Netherlands, with 38.8 thousand tonnes. Moreover, about 14,000 tonnes were imported from the German and French markets and slightly less than 11 thousand tonnes of tomatoes were supplied by Turkey.

Poland is also an important exporter of tomatoes. In the past year, the country shipped almost 95,000 tonnes, compared to 97.7 thousand tonnes a year earlier. Over 63,000 tonnes went to other EU countries and 31.7 thousand tonnes to other destinations.

The largest importer of Polish tomatoes was Belarus, with 28.9 thousand tonnes. Among the EU countries, the largest importers were Great Britain, with 10.4 thousand tonnes, and Spain, with over 8.2 thousand tonnes. Also, more than 5 thousand tonnes were bought by Czechs, Germans and Lithuanians.
