Ukrainian farmers are dynamically increasing the production of brassicas this season, primarily for cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage. For the most part, the growth is in answer to the demand voiced by processors and traders.
Over the past 10 years, sales has grown by 170%, and volumes have increased by 15% in the past three years. A vast majority of the growth has come from larger companies, where production has doubled, from 900 tons in 2007 to 2500 tons last year.
According to experts, the growth is due to an increase in the consumption of cauliflower and broccoli. The segment is expected to continue to grow, and frozen cabbage is also expected to increase.
Along with increasing production, a lot of investments are also being made for processing and storage. The ability to properly preserve these products is one of the most important technological advancements in the production of Chinese cabbage, which is more delicate than the common white cabbage.
Increased demand in foreign markets for Chinese cabbage is pushing production. Export of the cabbage has doubled over the last two seasons to 1,500 tons.
