According to figures from Landbrugsstyrelsen (the Danish Agricultural Agency), the number of hectares of cabbage cultivation increased by about 25 percent from 1500 to 1900 hectares from 2015 to 2020.
Peter Byrial Dalsgaard, team leader at Landbrugsstyrelsen: “We see that the 'easy' types of cabbage such as pointed cabbage and cauliflower are grown more outdoors. The amount of kale has also increased, although there was a small dip in cultivation in 2020.”
Cabbage has also been included in the Danish government's new food advice as one of the healthy and climate-friendly vegetables.
Cabbage Kings on Funen
By far the most cabbage in Denmark is grown on the island of Funen.
Dalsgaard: “In Denmark, in 2020, cabbage was grown on 1914 hectares. 704 hectares of this was on Funen, which is almost 40 percent of the total cabbage cultivation. West Jutland comes in second place with 528 hectares, South and West Zealand in third place with 358 hectares. ”
Because cabbage is such a versatile plant, different types of cabbage can be grown all year round. That is why there is almost always locally grown Danish cabbage in the supermarket.
