The Horticulture Department from Tamil Nadu’s Trichy District has announced incentives to growers to cultivate organic vegetables in the district. The incentive varies based on vegetables as growers will get Rs 1,000 per acre for greens, Rs 1,500 per acre for tomato, brinjal, ladies finger, gourds, and broad beans and Rs 2,000 for cabbage, cauliflower, capsicum and beans. Growers will be also given an additional Rs 200 per acre to meet certification charges.
Currently vegetables -mostly brinjal, chilies, onion followed by tomato, gourds, and greens- are cultivated in the district on 25,000 acres.
The state government has allotted Rs 700,000 for 452 acres in Trichy district under the National Horticulture Mission through the department of Horticulture and Plantation Crops, C. Vimala, deputy director of the horticulture department told TOI.
According to timesofindia.indiatimes.com¸ the government is also providing cash incentives to growers for the cultivation of off-season vegetables and will be given Rs 1,000 per acre so that the vegetables are available throughout the year to stabilize prices. District officials have appealed to local growers to avail the subsidy and increase the area of cultivation of organic vegetables.
