Due to the bad weather conditions, this year's potato production will be smaller than in previous years, and potato prices will rise by 50%, according to the growers.

Romulus Oprea, president of the Romanian Federation of Potato Producers, said that "because of the whimsical weather, potatoes have been affected and have also started to rot due to the moisture of the soil. Because of this, not only will this year's potato production be smaller, but quality may also be compromised and there may be difficulties in the storage. The price paid at origin to potato producers could reach between 1.20 and 1.30 lei per kilo.

According to Oprea, however, German, Dutch, Belgian and French potato producers have faced similar problems this summer, so it is expected that volumes will be smaller in these countries, too.
