“The past tomato season was very mediocre. We had long periods with low prices, even for specialities. The market has now recovered a bit, and prices for tomatoes are better than before,” says Benny Cuypers of BelOrta. “The tomatoes are gradually getting more competition from the South. The first supply has already arrived, and volumes will only increase. A few weeks ago, there were reports that supply from Spain would start later this year, but that wasn’t the case after all.”

Cucumbers
The cucumber season is now reaching its end. “Compared to the other greenhouse vegetables, cucumbers had a good year. Prices were considerable and growers were very satisfied with the season,” Benny says. “Last year, the cucumbers were in trouble, so it’s great that this year was better.”

Aubergines

As a result of competition from the South, the aubergine season had a tricky start. “The market recovered, but aubergines also had a difficult period in summer. The warm weather caused a lot of production, lowering prices,” Benny continues. “Demand for aubergines also dropped during the warm summer, because aubergines aren’t often eaten when it’s warm. Prices started recovering when autumn started, but generally speaking it’s been a mediocre season. About three or four weeks are left before the season is over again.”

Bell peppers

Bell peppers had a rough start this season, which will last until mid-November before reaching its end. At first prices were low, but this recovered, and prices were fair later on in the season. Just like the other greenhouse vegetables, the bell peppers weren’t much affected by the warm and dry summer. “In general, it’s been a difficult greenhouse vegetable season for all vegetables except cucumbers. The warm weather caused high productions, which had negative consequences for prices. Everything has now recovered, and we expect to close the season normally,” Benny concludes.
