Core Tip: Two recalls have been issued for undeclared sulfites in products.
Two recalls have been issued for undeclared sulfites in products. One of the recalls is for seedless raisins, the other for liquorice slice. Sulfites are not mentioned on the labels. Anyone who is allergic to or sensitive to sulfites could have a serious reaction if they eat these products. No adverse reactions or illnesses have been reported to date in either recall.

The first recall is for Liquorice Slice from New Nan Fong Hong Trading. The Source Day Natural Treasures Dried Liquorice Slice is sold in 16 ounce (454 gram) packages. There is no expiration date and no UPC number on the product. This product was imported from China. It was sold in New York City. Sampling by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors and subsequent analysis of the product by the New York State Food Laboratory personnel found the allergen in the product.

The second recall is for Fruits Du Sud Golden Seedless Raisins imported by P. East Trading Corporation of the Bronx, New York. The product is packed in 30 pound boxes with lot number FDS T499/18. It is a product of South Africa and was distributed in New York and New Jersey through retail stores. The production date is April 2018. Once again, sampling by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors and subsequent analysis by the Department’s Food Laboratory Personnel found the allergen in this product.

The consumption of 10 mg of sulfites per serving can trigger anaphylactic shock in some people with asthma and in some people who are sensitive to sulfite. The Fruits Du Sud Golden Seedless Raisins had 15 mg of sulfites per serving.

If you purchased these products with undeclared sulfites and are asthmatic or are sensitive to or allergic to sulfites, don’t eat it. Throw it away or take it back to the store for a refund.
