The new endive season promises to be uncertain

Core Tip: The endive producers of the En'Diva group are almost in full production.
The endive producers of the En'Diva group are almost in full production. According to Alban Descantes, it is difficult to position oneself in relation to the season that begins. "There is always a good balance between supply and demand, but you cannot really judge the quality of the new crop. The prolonged drought has caused great qualitative differences. This is an exceptional situation, and the precise consequences are still uncertain."

"One problem that may arise is that drought has affected the shelf life of endives, since roots are not always very large. Despite this, everything is done to supply the market with a good product."

Challenges for export
En'Diva exports a large part of its production. "Sometimes, competition is fierce between foreign operators, especially with the Dutch. They do not have the same vision of the market as we do. Their prices are very low, but the quality differs too. For us, goods with irreproachable sanitary conditions are a key factor to be able to succeed in export, also because the duration of the transit could be quite long."

Transition period
Currently, En'Diva producers are transitioning from the old roots of 2017 to the new roots, which were planted in 2018. The transition period will run until late November or early December.

Beside the white endive, En'Diva also offers friseline salad, organic and red endives. "As for diversification, we may have the same problem as with white endive. But that is not sure yet, either."
