Inspired Organics, which recalled Sunflower Butter last week for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination, is now recalling their Organic Almond Butter for the same reason. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The recalled product was distributed by Lipari Foods in Warren, Michigan to food service, and to food service and retail stores in Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The recalled product is Inspired Organics Organic Almond Butter in 16 ounce containers. The Lipari Item number is 967067, the best by date is 02/20, the lot number is 239, and the UPC number is 863669742540. Lipari Foods began shipping this product on October 31, 2018.

Product testing by Inspired Organics LLC returned positive tests for contamination.  The recall of the Sunflower Butter was prompted by testing conducted by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD). The company is working with the manufacturer, MDARD, and the FDA to investigate the situation.

If you purchased this product, don’t eat it. Throw it away in a sealed or double bagged package so other people and animals can’t access it, or return it to the store where you bought it for a refund.

Because Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can establish itself in an environment, it’s a good idea to clean out cupboards or the fridge, or wherever you stored this product, with a solution to 1 gallon warm water to 1 tablespoon liquid chlorine bleach.  Wash your hands well with soap and water after handling this product.

The symptoms of listeriosis, which can appear up to 70 days after exposure to the pathogen, can include high fever, stiff neck, severe headache, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea. If you ate this product and develop these symptoms, see your doctor.
