20 new cherry tomato varieties were successfully planted in Xiaotangshan, Beijing. The new varieties were introduced from the Netherlands, Japan, and the USA. They have matured, one after the other, and are expected to enter Beijing markets in large volumes before the Chinese Spring Festival next month.
Wang Yanfang, horticultural specialist at the Department for Promotion of Agricultural Technology in Beijing, explained that these 20 new varieties are all grown in China for the first time. They exhibit major differences in color, size, flavor, and firmness of fruit. This variety is necessary to satisfy the varied demand of consumers in Beijing. The cherry tomato from the Netherlands, variety 191, has a sugar content higher than 9. It is the main cultivar this year.
The estimated price of the new cherry tomato varieties, which will enter the market before Spring Festival, is around 20 yuan [2.96 USD] per 0.5 kg.
