In India, coriander prices are witnessing a fluctuating trend in the wholesale market. Two weeks ago, several farmers in Pune district had earned hundreds of thousands of rupees from the coriander harvest following a mismatch between demand and supply. A fortnight since then, the prices of the kitchen staple have drastically fallen in the APMC markets in Pune and Narayangaon.
Officials of these markets and wholesale traders attributed the fall to an excessive supply of coriander from Pune and its adjacent districts.
Wholesale traders and APMC officials said the prices would be in the same range at least for the next few weeks. "This period is conducive for leafy vegetables, as the sunlight and the cold conditions are suitable. The farmers are, however, worried about the extreme price fluctuations. "The market of leafy vegetables is unpredictable. Farmers growing coriander in extreme weather conditions make good money," a farmer from Bhose village.
