Over 72.400 farmers across the district have applied for onion grants of Rs200 (€2.45) per 100 kg with the district Agriculture Produce Market Committees (APMCs). The last date to apply for the aid was January 25.
Following request from the farmers, the state government had extended the deadline to apply for the grants from January 15th to the 25th. On January 8th, only 45,000 farmers had applied. After the extension of the deadline, an 27,000 additional farmers submitted their applications. These 72,000 farmers have sold around 280,000 tons of onions between November 1 and December 15. 2018. The grant amount for these onions is around Rs550 mln (€6.76 mln).
"However, the exact number of beneficiary farmers will be clear only after the amount is paid. We have already set up two committees to scrutinise the applications of onions farmers," sources from the office of Deputy District Registrar said.
"We have inspected applications of 43.577 farmers so far and they have claimed to have sold 166,700 tons of onions during this period. It will take some time to completely scrutinise the remaining applications,” an official told timesofindia.indiatimes.com
