The harvest of onions at Premium Fresh is almost done for the year, the harvest conditions have been very good except for a some rain in the last few days.

“We would have harvested most of our onions without a rain on them but the rain in the last week has slowed things up ,” said Jim Ertler from Premium Fresh in Tasmania. “That said the rain won’t have any impact on the quality of the onions as we have had hardly any rain during the main harvest.”

According to Jim volumes have been reasonable, with yields around normal levels and good sizes.

“We have more enquiries about sales than we have onions though, “ said Jim. “The New Zealand crop was hugely impacted by wet weather followed by the cyclone which put pressure on their exports volumes, in fact volumes globally are down.”

Although prices for onions are strong on the Australian domestic market other crops such as carrots and broccoli are over-supplied, it is a mixed bag.
