Vegetable supply to the Hangzhou market was abundant in the winter of 2018 and the prices remained in relatively low position. After the peak sales period around Chinese Spring Festival [February 5th, 2019], the vegetable prices in Hangzhou Vegetable Wholesale Market resume their low position. Weather conditions are not ideal and the number of clients is limited, which makes sales less than smooth.
The prices of spring bamboo shoots and winter bamboo shoots show the greatest drop in the vegetable market. One trader explained: "The wholesale price of winter bamboo is 4.5 yuan [0.66 USD] per 0.5 kg, which was around 10 yuan [1.48 USD] before Spring Festival; the wholesale price of spring bamboo is 12 yuan [1.77 USD] per 0.5 kg, which was around 20 yuan [2.95 USD] before."
People in the industry state that excessive rainfall flooded the bamboo shoots, and the price of bamboo shoots is 30% lower than the same period last year. This is particularly true for winter bamboo as there is a large volume in storage that has not yet been sold. It is hoped that market demand will grow stronger.
