Core Tip: Over a thousand plantain trees were destroyed in the gusty winds in Gudiyatham and neighbouring places.
Over a thousand plantain trees were destroyed in the gusty winds in Gudiyatham and neighbouring places. Throughout the Vellore district people are experiencing hot weather during daytime, but the evenings are cooler in some regions due to sudden spell of showers and sometimes gusty winds. For the past two days, Guidyatham and its neighbouring villages have been receiving intermittent rains.

Modikuppam, Valasai, Kottamitta, Synagunta, Keezhkollapalli received over 4 mm of rain with thunderstorms. Due to this, several plantain trees ready for harvest were uprooted leaving farmers in the lurch. Each tree had more than 100 banana fruits on it.

Some of the coconut and mango trees also suffered extensive damage in the two days’ rain. Instead of waiting for orders from senior officials, the inspection staff should continue their routine work of assessing the damage at once to issue the necessary compensation.
