Blueberry cultivation continues to increase in Peru. Blueberry production between January and April 2019 increased by 105% over the same period of the previous year, going from 12,027 tons in 2018 to 24,670 tons this year, according to data published by the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri).
The average price paid to producers between January and April of this year stood at S / 8.60 per kilogram, i.e. 27% higher than the S / 6.76 per kilogram of the same period of 2018.
Fresh blueberry exports in the period between January and May of this year amounted to a FOB value of 84 million dollars, i.e. 73% more than the 50 million dollars achieved during the same period of 2018.
Exports and markets
So far in 2019, blueberry exports rank fourth among Peruvian agricultural exports.
In 2018, the main destination markets for fresh blueberries were the United States (52%), the Netherlands (22%) and England (10%), which together account for 84.5% of the total value exported. In 2019, the main destination markets so far have been the United States, and the Netherlands and England, which together account for 93.6% of the total value exported.
Chile was the leading exporter of blueberries in the world at the end of 2018, accounting for 21% of the total exported. It was followed by Peru, with 17%, Spain and the Netherlands, each with 12% of the total, and the United States, with 7%, among others.
