Budget airlines IndiGo and Air India Express have increased the freight charges to Sharjah and Dubai, flown from Karipur airport. The Exporters Association protested against the move and stopped cargo movement starting last Sunday.
The freight charges were increased only for outgoing flights from Karipur airport. Earlier one kilo cargo was charged Rs 42 (€0.53). The rate is now hiked to Rs 53 (€0.67) per kilo. Cargo transported from Karipur often consists of fruits and vegetables. Air India operates one daily flight to Sharjah and Dubai, while Air India Express has one service to Dubai and two services to Sharjah daily.
Each flight carries 3 tons cargo. Due to the protest, the cargo movement of 15 tons from Karipur daily has come to a halt. However, Air India authorities haven’t revealed the reason for the freight price hikes from Karipur alone. As confirmed by english.mathrubhumi.com, the cargo rate to other destinations in UAE hasn’t increased.
