Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Ram Vilas Paswan has urged all the state governments for making water standards mandatory for tap water. The minister informed that he had written to all the state chief ministers in this regards. He informed that BIS is also working on a quality ranking of all the districts in the country.
Paswan while interacting with the media here on the sidelines of a programme on World Standards Day, told that the access to clean drinking water will become a popular movement and will soon spread across the country.
He further said that the ministry will come out with Water Quality Rankings beginning with 100 Smart Cities and all state capitals in the next three months, and this will be extended to all districts in six months.
Paswan said, “BIS, which sets quality standards for piped water, has a huge role to play in this regard. The BIS has carried out testing of quality of Delhi water and is awaiting the final report of the 11 samples collected from various places.”
He added that once the report is out it will be made public while emphasising that access to clean water can’t be a luxury.
It is pertinent to mention here that recently a meeting was held at the Ministry of Consumer Affairs of officials from BIS, FSSAI and Jal Shakti Ministry to deliberate upon the standards for tap water, wherein it was informed that the BIS has been working on the subject and soon the work will be completed.
