Magura is a city (and a district) in south-western Bangladesh. It is a part of the Khulna Division. Wholesalers in Magura are blaming the high prices for winter vegetables on the incessant rains, which disrupted smooth supply across the district.
Despite adequate supply of winter vegetables in kitchen markets, the high prices have made it impossible for consumers in Magura to purchase them. And while the wholesalers blame the high prices on the incessant rains, farmers alleged that they also did not receive a fair price for their produces.
A correspondent found an abundance of beans, cauliflower, cabbage, radish, tomato, and other winter vegetables, but a lack of customers for them. Retailers said they bought the vegetables at high prices from wholesalers.
Shahadat Miah, a wholesaler, said the supply of winter vegetables are comparably low in number compared to previous years, due to untimely rainfall in the district. Rahmat Sheikh, another retailer, said he purchased vegetables directly from farmers, who are selling them at high prices this year, which forced him to sell them to consumers at high prices.
