The Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona has launched an innovative facial oil made with lycopene, a powerful natural antioxidant extracted from the tomatoes known as “red gold”. It is made with tomatoes from Extremadura.

According to the company, lycopene has a regenerating and soothing effect and is suitable for all skin types. It helps in reducing the spots produced by the sun or age and caring for the most sensitive skin, and it fights aging.

The cosmetic was made available in early August in all 1,636 Mercadona stores across Spain for a price of 5 Euro for 30 ml. As reported by Juan Roig's company, they are selling 5,000 units a day.

Mercadona markets it under its store brand of cosmetics Deliplus and the company in charge of manufacturing it is Cosmética Natural de Licopeno S.L in its facilities in Badajoz.

To obtain 1 kilo of lycopene, which is extracted from the seeds and the skin of tomatoes, 20,000 kilos of the crop are needed.
