Garlic imports have a negative impact on the production of Serbian garlic, said Serbian farmer Aleksandar Granich.
The Serbian Chamber of Commerce reports that in the last five or six years garlic planting in Serbia covers 1,295 hectares and produces 3,750 tons of this product. But in the 2022/2023 season, many garlic growers have reduced their planting and production areas. Because last year's import from Albania and North Macedonia lowered its price.
The value of garlic imports is estimated at 2.1 million euros.
“Most of all garlic we traditionally import from China, about 77 percent or 820 tons,” the Serbian Chamber of Commerce said.
