Last year AGF-Holland introduced the Johannes packaging line, a plastic-free packaging line for the entire fruit and vegetable department, with a line of baskets, trays and bands made of specially developed natural cardboard. Johannes Janssen already knew that this packaging met a need due to worldwide interest, but the design has now also won a bronze award from the international Pentawords 2020 in the top 3 sustainable packaging for fruit and vegetables.

"The demand for this new packaging is really unprecedented. Actually, I can't name a single European country that has not shown any interest in this packaging and the line is now sold worldwide. So far, our packaging is on the supermarket shelves abroad, such as in Switzerland. France and Germany. Everyone is looking for a sustainable solution and this packaging line clearly meets a need. That is of course also due to the appearance. For the agency Guts & Glorious, which designed this line, this prestigious award is also a reward for their work, bringing our Johannes vision to life with this design. "
"We are of course pleased with this award, but for us it is above all a confirmation that the image is also catching on globally. There were more than 2,000 submissions for these awards from more than sixty countries. We are very proud of winning this prize, "says Johannes. The pure natural cardboard is obtained from sustainable logging, which leaves the quality of fruit and vegetables completely intact.
The Johannes baskets and bowls come in all sizes, from small to large, the handles are sturdy and also make the larger sizes a handy, stackable, practical and striking product. The strength of this concept is that it can be applied to most of the fruit and vegetable department, from strawberries to top fruit and from tangerines to tomatoes. “Last year, a plastic reduction was one of the biggest items guiding the supermarket shelf. You can see that the Corona crisis has pushed this focus to the background for a moment. Nevertheless, we see that the topic is once again carefully gaining attention and we expect it to definitely return to the agenda.
"A growing number of growers pick directly into our packaging. In addition to selling packaging, we are also a packing station and we package for retailers, wholesalers and importers at home and abroad," says Johannes. In addition to the Pentawords, the Johannes packaging line has also been nominated for the NL Packaging Award. This result will be announced next year.
