The shortage of tomatoes and peppers has been making the headlines lately, but root vegetables are also in short supply in the UK.

"Supply varies from crop to crop, and there are a couple of reasons for this," said Jack Ward, CEO of the British Growers Association. "In the cold spell before Christmas a lot crops were destroyed, but some like carrots and leeks the damage was done during the drought in the summer and volumes are down around 30%."

This will mean that the gap between the end of the current season and the start of the next will be longer. It has also been a very dry winter across the UK which may also add to grower's woes. Jack said one leek grower had been irrigating his leeks in February!

This week the UK and parts of Europe have seen sub-zero temperatures and varying amounts of snow, but it is supposed to short lived and not expected to cause any damage.
