A freeze warning will be in effect for the entire week, threatening the crops of local Californian farmers. Currently, several almond orchards are already blossoming. This means they're more susceptible to frost right now.
Andrew Mendonca, an almond farmer in Butte and Glenn counties: "They're already protecting for worst-case scenario.” He also stated that the worst case scenario is losing his crop to the cold. "My family has been doing this for more than 102 years. From now all the way up until May. At any time it can get cold, those nuts are susceptible.”
Mendonca said his number one tool to prevent his crop from freezing is his sprinklers. These are turned on depending on what the dew point is overnight. The water then warms the soil, causing it to radiate heat on the canopy of the orchard.
