Core Tip: An inspection team from Taiwan visited the US to evaluate the safety of beef in the country after mad cow disease was confirmed in a dairy cow in California last month.

The food inspectors visited the the American Meat Institute as well as the Consumers Union, which publishes consumer reports.

The team was informed about the meat production and sales in the US, and was assured that the case of mad cow disease in California was atypical. The institute also briefed the team about the control measures which have been implemented to prevent an outbreak of the disease.

The union suggested that the Taiwanese authorities could step up food inspection to ensure meat safety. The Taiwanese officials are also set to meet with their counterparts in relevant agencies, to know more about the case.

Taiwan has the permit to evaluate beef slaughterhouses and processing plants in the US, under the agreement that led to the easing of a ban on imports beef imports in 2009.
