Core Tip: The Indian food processing ministry plans to invest INR2.4bn ($43m) to set up new abattoirs and upgrade the existing ones.
This announcement was made by assistant director general of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) at a conference on meat processing technologies organized by the Tamil Nadu Technology Development and Promotion Centre (TNDPC).

B S Prakash said that the Union Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) would make investments to create a brand value for the Indian wholesome hygienic meat products and byproducts.

The industry and academia should collaborate to lower the challenges and enhance meat production in the country, he added.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad-based National Research Centre on Meat (NRCM) plans to work with TNDPC to start training programs for entrepreneurs in the meat segment, reported Business Standard.

Even though India has considerable livestock population, it exports less than 3% of its meat and meat products.
