Core Tip: Marketing healthier foods, or better brands, or using innovative food ingredients or processes, can involve a regulatory minefield of Health Claim hazards.
On 21 August 2012, some of Australia’s top food regulators, legal experts and policy makers will be speaking on the regulatory issues of Health Claims at FoodLegal’s half-day Symposium, ‘Health Claim Hazards: Navigating the regulatory minefield’.

Speakers include FSANZ General Manager Dean Stockwell, the New South Wales Food Authority’s (NSWFA) Manager of Enforcement Peter Day, and food regulatory experts Joe Lederman, Charles Fisher, Carole Inkster (ex-NZFSA) and Jonathan Kite (FSANZ Risk Manager).

Various presentations will address food marketing concerns and opportunities under the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code, or the Competition and Consumer Act and other regimes. The hot food marketing issues such as parallel imports, novel foods, special-purpose medical foods, New Zealand’s Supplemented Food Standard and its free trade opportunities, will also be addressed.

A taste of the top line-up

FSANZ’s Dean Stockwell’s topic will address ‘Moves towards a workable Health Claims standard and its challenges.’

Peter Day, Executive Director of Compliance at the NSWFA will discuss ‘Enforcement and regulatory approaches in relation to Health Claims.’

Food law expert Joe Lederman, Managing Principal of FoodLegal, will speak on ‘Marketing healthier foods, better brands, and more branding issues: the challenges and opportunities!’

Senior Food Scientist and Risk Manager at FSANZ, Jonathan Kite, will address regulatory issues concerning new foods or food substances.

Providing a New Zealand angle, Carole Inkster will consider the regulatory opportunity for Australian food businesses in ‘Something Special from New Zealand – the Supplemented Food Standard’.

Pre-booking is essential for this Symposium, which will be held at The Menzies Hotel in Sydney. Bookings online are from
here, and like all previous FoodLegal Symposiums, seats are expected to fill fast.
