Chinese dairy processor Hunan Ava Dairy Co is recalling five batches of infant formula after a local government study found high levels of cancer-causing aflatoxins.
Officials in the south China city of Guangzhou found excessive amounts of the naturally-occurring toxin in five formula products manufactured between July 2011 and December 2011 under the brand Times Hui and Gold Times Hui.
Four of the products were manufactured by Ava Dairy Co, while the fifth was produced by Hunan Ava Dairy – Ava Dairy’s parent company.
The recalls were ordered following the publication of a report by the Guangzhou City Administration for Industry and Commerce detailing a Q2 2012 sample of dairy and milk products in the city.
Authorities took samples from 610 batches of infant formula during the food sampling, of which only six failed, including the five Hunan Ava Dairy products.
Retailers have been ordered to suspend sale of the products while the manufacturer pulls the potentially contaminated products from shelves.
