The new site opened 1 August with the creation of six jobs. With a local population of only 150, this number of new jobs has been welcomed by the local community. Eday is located in the northern isles of Orkney, 15 miles from mainland Orkney and will become one of Scottish Sea Farms’ most remote locations for farming salmon.
Local Area Manager, Richard Darbyshire of Scottish Sea Farms, said: “The waters around Eday are renowned for their fast flowing currents and high water quality. This environment is ideal for growing strong muscular fish of premium quality. To farm in such an environment has required a high level of investment in the latest ‘state of the art’ mooring systems and circular cages.
“Importantly, we have created some brand new jobs in a remote location. We hope to produce around 1200 tonnes of fresh salmon over the next 18 months at Eday. Due to the growing demand for Orkney grown salmon from our customers we have plans to expand the Eday site in the future as well as continuing to work to create new production sites in the Orkney Islands over the coming years.
Eday will become Scottish Sea Farms’ fifth production site within Orkney. Their Orkney region currently produces approx 4000T of quality salmon per annum for some of the UK’s top restaurants and retailers, as well as for key export markets globally.
