Spence recalls salmon products over Listeria contamination risk

Core Tip: Spence, a smoked salmon firm based in Massachusetts, US, is recalling salmon products as they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The products affected by this recall are Wellsley Farms brand 16oz Nova bearing lot no: 6704701; and Spence & Co brand 8oz Smoked bearing lot no: 6704701.

Wellsley Farms brand 16oz Nova was distributed to BJ'S Wholesale Club stores in Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York & Ohio on 13 June 2012.

Spence & Co brand 8oz Smoked Salmon Trim was distributed to Krogers and King Soopers in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Colorado, Wyoming & Utah between 22 June and 29 June 2012.

The recall affects 576 packs of Wellsley Farms Nova and 119 packs of Spence & Co Ltd 8oz Smoked Salmon Trim.

No illnesses have been reported. The bacterium was identified during routine sampling. Consumers who have purchased either product should get in touch with the place of purchase for a full refund.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious or life-threatening food borne illness in a person who consumes a food item contaminated with it. Symptoms of infection may include fever, muscle aches, gastro intestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea.
