Based in Sutherland in the very North West of Scotland, Loch Duart is noted for its ethical and sustainable approach to salmon farming which has earned the company an outstanding reputation in the industry and top-end customers in Europe, America and beyond.
Mr Joy has over 30 years experience in the Scottish salmon farming industry. A passion for fish started with happy boyhood days of angling and has continued through a career dedicated to farming salmon and trout. He has always worked in the independent sector of the industry and vigorously promotes Loch Duart’s approach to sustainability in aquaculture.
Under Mr Joy’s stewardship, the company has successfully implemented ground-breaking initiatives in fish welfare, full-year fallowing, water quality and bespoke fishmeal from proven sustainable sources.
Loch Duart was the first salmon farm in the world to achieve Freedom Food approval – was the national winner of the VIBES Award (Vision in Business for the Environment of Scotland) in 2005 and the first Gold Award winner of ‘Best Food’ in The Daily Telegraph/Sainsbury’s ‘Taste of Britain’ Awards in 2006.
The company was awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2008 and is an Oceans 25 Ambassador of the Marine Conservation Society – underlining the company’s commitment to MCS’s vision of clean, clear sustainable fisheries and protection of wildlife.
