Federation of Hotels and Restaurants’ Association of India (FHRAI) - the apex body of the Indian hospitality industry - plans to set up inexpensive food testing laboratories in the country, in order to provide an affordable way to ensure safety and hygiene.

With the establishment of new food laboratories, FHRAI is seeking to provide a cost-effective alternative to the existing multinational food labs, which are expensive and limited.

This move comes in response to the government's plans to strictly implement the Food Safety & Standards Act.

FHRAI subcommittee chairman was quoted by the Deccan Chronicle as saying that it is important for all stakeholders to collaborate to ensure the new rules do not place burden on the industry, particularly small and mid-sized firms.

The new laboratories will feature scientific instruments and facilities. FHRAI will also put efforts to gain National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) accreditation for its labs, which would be headed by a team of experts and trained technicians from the FHRAI.
