Hillshire Brands has announced that it is “advancing” in its quest to find alternatives to traditional gestation housing for pigs and intends to have a solution in place by the end of 2022.

The company, which does not rear its own pigs, said it was “actively” engaging in debate with suppliers and the wider industry, and aims to source all its pork from suppliers who use housing that allows pigs “adequate movement and comfort, while also ensuring their safety”.

Mike Cummins, director of corporate communications, said: “Hillshire Brands takes concerns about the welfare of animals seriously, which is why we have a comprehensive Animal Well-Being Program in place.”
