US-based grocery chain Safeway has extended its recall of ground beef items after it was informed by Interstate Meat Distributors that some of the ground beef products produced for Safeway included trimmings that were subject to XL Foods' expanded recall.
Safeway voluntarily extended its recall of ground beef items made earlier on 22 September and included additional states.
This recall includes Safeway stores in Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington; all fresh ground beef sold from the self-service meat cooler and the full-service meat counter with Sell By dates of 08-28-12 to 09-23-12; and items that use fresh ground beef as an ingredient.
The US Department of Agriculture(USDA) food safety information services expanded the alert on raw boneless beef trim products imported from XL foods,Canada over E.coli O157:H7 contamination.
Consumption of food contaminated with E.coli bacteria can lead to diarrhoea, dehydration and, in the most severe cases, kidney failure, and it can cause serious illness in very young, elderly, and those with weak immune systems.
